The Killing Of Sister George

When I was in London the other day I caught the matinee of The Killing Of Sister George at The Arts Theatre. The 60's lesbian soap drama made famous by the Beryl Reid movie is currently playing to as half filled houses as Britney's world tour. I actually really enjoyed it and thought it was a great production. The set was pretty spectacular with the 60's sitting room morphed into a Dansette wireless, the medium in which Sister George played out her weekly antics to her public.

The drama unfolds as Sister George discovers her character is to be killed off and takes it out on her girlfriend in the dysfunctional relationship. Meera Syal plays the butch lesbian top, strangely believably if you can imagine an Indian lady being an out and proud lesbian in the 60's. I was looking forward to seeing Helen Lederer but very disappointed in her performance as the physic neighbour, but she wasn't as bad as the BBC executives Valerie Singleton wig.

It all ends in massive lesbian high drama but in spite of being a little bit dated it was a very enjoyable afternoon and much better value for money than the car crash that followed at The O2.
