Eye Trauma

Yesterday I went through the horrors of the optometrist. It took ages as I kept blinking and jumping when my head was clamped into the machine but I eventually got through it and the verdict was my eyes are like those of an 80 year old!
I had chosen a pair of rimless frames but I'm not going to be able to have them due to the re entry shield type lenses I'm going to need so I'm going to have to get rimmed (I know, but the old ones are the best).
I'm going to try with contact lenses so have an appointment for a fitting which I'm sure I'm not going to manage. I also asked about laser surgery but it's not an option as my eyes are "too old".
The torture chamber.

They also gave me a sign on so I can view the inside of my eyes from the comfort of my own home? Nice!

As horrific and unpleasant as the whole experience was they saved the worst part till last, the bill!

Eastbourne For Eva

I took the train to Eastbourne today and it was a total shocker! It is only 30 minutes down the coast but it could have been a million miles away. I know now why they call it Gods waiting room, it is pensioner central. I did the town, the seafront and the pier in 10 minutes, everywhere there was just hordes of pensioners sitting there doing nothing. In some ways it was quite sweet, especially when it started raining and in a simultaneous move the plastic rain hoods were put on. There was nothing to eat there except fish and chips so I had some chips, and tried to kill some time by walking up the pier and going for a drink.

The reason I was in Eastbourne was to see a touring production of Evita. I love Evita and it was really, really good. The part of Che was played by someone who had been in one of those karaoke TV shows to find the lead in Joseph and Madonna was played by some girl who had apparently been in Hairspray and some other stuff. For a touring production the set was really good, with a balcony that came right to the front for the big number. The last time I saw Evita was the Elena Rogers latinesque revamped version in the West End but this was the original score and seemed to be a mix of the Julie Covington and Elaine Paige versions. What I found weird was they held true to the original, with Che's speech at the end about Evita's body going missing and the line "She's a new world Madonna" being included which for some reason didn't make it into the movie. But the new song You Must Love Me was thrown in, which after hearing the real Evita sing it a couple of nights before seemed a bit lame.

The chorus were fantastic, totally loved them. Che had a really good voice but he lost me through having just the one facial expression all the way through and Eva had a really good voice but she was so wrong for the part. She was too young, too dainty and even the blonde wig didn't empower her. As everyone knows to take on the role of Evita you need to have extremely strong features, ambition, a sense of power and balls of steel. She was just too wimpy to match up to the Eva's that went before her.
Also, as the majority of the audience were over 90 there seemed to be an outbreak of emphysema going on and the coughing through Another Suitcase was particularly annoying.
I really enjoyed it though and was well worth going to Oldsville for the day to get a fix of Eva.

MJ The Farewell

I spent about 3 hours glued to the Michael Jackson memorial service today and I still don't know exactly how I feel about it. I found a very small part of it moving, some of it tasteful but on the whole it was car crash TV, tacky, vulgar, exploitative and when that poor little white girl was unmasked for the first time and brought on stage I found it grotesque.
I think a memorial concert was definitely appropriate but a private funeral followed by a memorial some weeks later would have been a lot more dignified. I also think it should have been paid for by the Jacksons not the bill footed by an apparently cash strapped LA.
What I didn't like about it was the gold coffin, tackorama!
Mariah, she looked awful, her hair was shocking and she sang like crap and I love Mariah.

I also disliked how everyone said how wonderful he was (understandably) but then said we should ignore all the scandalous stories of the last few years. You can't just sweep all those stories under the carpet, they go with the territory. The man was not a saint, he was a businessman, and was allegedly a drug addict amongst other things. As talented and fantastic as Amy Winehouse is, would we give her a state funeral?
I had major issues that those 3 kids were put through it and made to be part of the circus.
I hated some crazed black congress woman in a bad white suit saying we should have a Michael Jackson day or something.
Some ghastly Welsh child singing and then being shamelessly hawked as the next best thing in the middle of it all. He was the only performer that spoke, has Joe Jackson bought his contract?
When the This Is It promoter said he was going to show the world what the show was going to be like, I got quite excited thinking we were going to see some footage. Alas all it seemed to be was the backing singers doing We Are The World, glad I hadn't bought a ticket then.
What I DID like about it was firstly Jennifer Hudson, in spite of a poor choice of maternity wear she was fantastic, emotional, dignified and she sang Mariah off stage.

Brooke Shields, classy and eventually came clean that they never dated but were just kindred spirits and in the same weird child star position.
I thought the Jacksons all wearing one sequined glove was cute.

Usher, very moving when he touched the coffin.

Janet looked fantastic, girlfriend was really working the beret and had some fierce shoes on. On the other hand Latoyah looked like she was wearing something from a Dynasty funeral.

My favourite part though, and the most moving was at the very end when there was just a spotlight and an unattended microphone centre stage as the coffin was removed.

Ashamed

The MJ funeral extravaganza is happening this afternoon, Liz Taylor has decided not to go as she "doesn't want to be part of the hoopla". I can understand that as it getting tackier by the minute. The memorial service hasn't even happened yet and it was the lead story this morning, ahead of the 7/7 memorial service being held in Hyde Park?
I will be watching it myself, Mariah and Jennifer Hudson will be singing, but I can't believe the people who are in LA for it, it's a funeral/memorial not an excuse to disco. The worst of the lot though was this clip from Sky news, sometimes it is just too embarrassing to say I am Welsh!

The Day After

The come down has hit in big time today after months of looking forward to it Madonna has been and gone and left me with just memories, aching bones and a slight hangover.
I had an early start yesterday as I met up with Judith and Mike who were up in London for the weekend from Swansea. I hadn't seen them in over 2 years so it was nice to meet up but I forgot to take any photos. Still I caught up with everyones news and had a bitch about Bonnie and the Zeta Jones'.
After they went for their train I headed to Soho to meet Andrew, we decided to do a few gay bars to get in the mood for Madonna expecting them all to be playing her to death. For some crazy reason they all had bloody tennis on so we ended up in the Kings Arms were I put a fortune in the juke box but didn't know how to use it and some loser turned the tennis up.

The journey to The O2 was shocking, with tubes, DLR, millions of steps and then gangplanks onto a boat. Everyone pushing and shoving trying to get on with very little Dunkirk spirit, it was every queen for himself not going to be left on the quayside. I was just terrified I was going to drown minutes before seeing Our Lady. It was quite cool seeing The O2 from the water though, like a million people heading for Mecca or something with pictures of Our Glorious Leader all lit up on it.

When I took my seat I thought wow, great spot, worth the money and the seat next to me was empty, then this couple came up and said I was in their seats. I hate people who can't even read a number off a ticket and I got a bit frantic that this was my seat then realised it was me who couldn't read a seat number so red faced I moved down to even a more magnificent seat and for the next 2 hours I got totally sticky & sweet.

After a very stressful journey back I eventually got home and have done nothing today except reflect on what a fabulous night it was last night even though it's all over now. Still, the tickets for Alison Moyet's 25th solo anniversary tour go on sale tomorrow, when god closes a door somewhere he opens a window.

Five On The Fifth

">
I always meant to do 12 on the 12th where you post 12 photos of what you did on the 12th of each month, but I never got around to it and never found 12 interesting enough things I did to photograph. Stephen has come up with the idea though of doing 5 on the fifth so I am going to try and do this each month, so here's my 5 on the 5th.
On the train into town to meet Judith, Mike and Andrew. The shrine at Thriller Live in the West End. To and from The O2 by scary boat and on the tube.

Madonna At The O2

The horrors of London transport eventually got me to The O2 tonight by boat in time for Madonna's second night of Sticky & Sweet 2. Just like last year she was amazing and her sugar was raw beyond. I had a really amazing, if overpriced seat and she started without the expected warm up by Paul Oakenfield I think to finish early due to the transport issues. The show started off identical to last years tour with her Madgesty appearing on her throne with a slightly more tailored, fringeless ensemble on.

The first few songs carried on the same with the Britney video and the Madillac, but she really stepped it up with the next section Old School. Instead of the shorts she had a little gym skirt on and she had kept her fringe longer with a side parting. Heartbeat was dropped for Holiday which gave me a massive rush. I was gutted she hadn't done it last year and now it was back where it belonged, centre stage in an M show. Half way through it she paused to pay her tribute to MJ with a break into Wanna Be Starting Something and one of the dancers dressed as 80's Jacko with old school pictures of him on the screen. It needed to be done and as always Madonna did it with style and class.
Holiday then returned and instead of Borderline she did Dress You Up !!!!!!!! It was a massive OMG moment and I was in heaven listening to her doing this song again after so many years. The show returned to the previous outing and she was as always amazing, the smaller setting of the O2 worked with the dancers really well, especially for She's Not Me but the highpoint was still, Like A Prayer if not just this show but of all her tours this mash up of Like a Prayer/Feels Like Home is major. Instead of disappearing after this she did Frozen which had some amazing choreography and then it was the finale of guitar driven Ray Of Light and ending with Give It To Me. She was fantastic from start to finish and this is the biggest thing of the year for me.

When I eventually got to Victoria I got on the train and it was full of middle aged house frau's in Take That T Shirts as they had been playing Wembley. I cranked up my ipod but this queen with I Heart Gary written on his face was holding court saying ask me anything about Take That. He seemed to know his stuff but I piped up and said who wrote Gary Barlow's hit solo single, he said which one? I said the only one that charted! He couldn't answer so I said Madonna and everyone said oh yes and asked if I had just been to see her. I said Hell Yes not some crap boy band but the show was over so I took a bow.

The Return

I am off now for 7 days, I finished work tonight with both Saturday and Sunday booked off. Saturday night is the TV showing of the Sticky & Sweet show so I need to be off to watch that and get into the groove for Sunday when I go to The O2 to see Sticky & Sweet 2, The Return.
The only blot on the horizon is TFL have done it again, closed the Jubilee line for maintenance for both of Madonna's shows, are they f'ing morons! It was bad enough they did it for Britney but to have to go through it again is chronic, there are apparently 50 nights that The O2 is now going to be dark for so why can't they do the work on those nights? I'm not going to book anything at The O2 again until this debacle is sorted out.
I will have to set out about 6am to ensure that I get there in a serene and composed state ready to greet the high priestess of life.

Nuns On The Run

On the hottest day of the year I decided to stop off in London on my way home, the hottest part of the country. It was madness but a few cold beers in an air conditioned pub helped break the journey. I also wanted to try for a ticket for Sister Act, it only opened last month but I think it's struggling as the cast are hawking the show on every TV programme and they are already selling reduced tickets at TKTS. I got the bargain of the year as I went to the box office and asked if they had any cheap seats for tonight and he told me they weren't opening the balcony tonight as there was some tennis match on and with the heatwave they weren't expecting a full house. So basically he said I could buy a balcony ticket and get a premium seat in the stalls, bargain.

I love the movie and have seen it thousands of times so was looking forward to the show.It opened with Deloris doing her club act which was great. The story has been relocated to 70's Philadelphia and a whole new score written of 70's inspired disco hymns. It then went a bit flat after Deloris goes on the run, there was too much explaining the story and Patina Miller who plays Deloris has an amazing voice but I kept comparing her to Whoopi and no one has Whoopi's comedy talents. Once she started teaching the nuns to boogie though I was able to forget the movie and the musical took on it's own identity and it was fabulous.
The bar scene was full of Village People types, the singing nuns costumes got better and glitzier with each song and then when I was really getting into it there was an interval.
The second half was even funnier and some great songs and the story went to the big chase and the Pope coming to see the choir and the big finale with some truly outrageous sparkly sequined habits and Deloris had morphed into Diana Ross.
I hope it doesn't close as it was a great show and I really enjoyed it. My favourite part was when sweaty Eddie changed from a cop, to a Chi Lite and back to a cop again in the blink of an eye. I also loved how the Pope makes his appearance and how a disco ball makes an appearance as well.
My criticism would be Sheila Hancock, I really like her but I was pretty underwhelmed by her in this, she was playing Maggie Smith's part though so some tough competition. Some of it is really predictable but if you want a fun feel good show go see it.
The OCR is out this month so I will definitely be getting that.

The Way He Makes Me Feel

A few days in and unlike the majority who are sick of it I am getting more and more intrigued with the Michael Jackson story. Did he OD, was it anorexia that killed him, did the father have him killed so he could put the Jackson 4 on stage at The O2. It gets messier and darker by the day. I'm up with my mother at the moment and she's asking me really difficult questions like why are his children white, why is he white, if he owed $500 million why is his estate worth $800 million, is he wearing lipstick? I just don't have the answers to these questions, but I'm sure the truth will surface soon.
One thing that's true is that where ever you go there's a Jacko song playing, every car that passes, every shop you go into, every TV show. My relationship with MJ finished with Thriller, I was an Off The Wall man, for me it was all about the Fro, Thriller was brilliant but I never went to Bad and Dangerous was a no no. Of all the songs playing everywhere I can't for the life of me get Wanna Be Starting Something out of my head. I googled the lyrics tonight as I thought I must be wrong thinking he sings Your A Vegetable but I was right. Wikapedia says it was meant for Off The Wall but was held back as the opening number for Thriller, which shows I'm really a 70's boy.
There was a shocker of a programme tonight with David Gest introducing the top 40 MJ songs. The videos for songs like The Way You Make Me Feel he still looked like an attractive, if a bit fem, black man. By the time it got to You Are Not Alone with him in drag, in a open lace blouse cavorting with Lisa Marie I was heaving, the emaciated bleached body, the bad wig, the drag queen make up, not a good look
I still have issues with MJ, guilty or innocent there was still way TMI at the trial for me to ever have a relationship with him again. There was far too much unsavoury things that came out. For all the tributes from his musical colleagues how many of them would really have had him round to babysit.
Saying that there are some things that Ms Michael Jackson brought to the world that we should be thankful for and pay respect to, I'm talking about Scream, Don't Stop Till You Get Enough, Wannabe Starting Something and Billie Jean, which was even sampled by Madonna on The Virgin Tour. She don't do covers of just any old song.

Day Of The Dead

The news that Farrah Fawcett died today really saddened me, I'm of the age that I had that poster on my bedroom wall and she was my favourite Angel. She died with class and dignity unlike other recent high profile deaths and she was most definitely a lady and quite gorgeous.

Farrah's death has been relegated to the back pages though by the bigger death of Michael Jackson. There are certainly going to be a lot of tears tonight, mostly though from Ticketmaster, The O2 and the insurance company. The insurance company recently said that he was in the peak of health and they had no concerns ?. A lot is being made that he was doing a 50 date residency and it was too much. As a world tour would usually last sometimes 9 to 12 months and involve a lot a travelling 50 shows over a year in one place was not that big a deal, 2 hours a week tops.
I wasn't a big fan of him and had no desire to go to any of his shows. I loved his music and videos at the time and the songs have a career of their own as samples and covers. The conspiracy rumours have already started and nothing will surprise me especially when you think how much the advance would have been.
The real tragedy in this is the 3 children left behind, who most certainly were not fathered by an African American and were sold by their mothers to someone with shall we say had a "questionable" history. These children having been brought up wearing masks are no doubt already disturbed and dysfunctional and what is to become of them?.
I feel for his fans as they will no doubt be devastated but the news coverage and interviews with people like Uri Geller is a bit OTT.
A sad day for showbiz.

To Be Or Not To Be

Some 18 months ago on the day they went on sale I booked a ticket for Hamlet starring Jude Law. It seems like years ago but when I arrived at the theatre I was glad I had been sensible enough to do it as the queue for returns was massive and you can't get a ticket for love or money. I went to the front row to take my seat and it was the exact same seat I had to see Madonna in Up For Grabs. The only difference being there wasn't a massive security person either side of the stage to stop over zealous fans storming the stage, or was that just the night I was there?

Anyway, cut to Hamlet. I have to say I haven't read it since I was at school and the last production I saw of it was in the 80's. I have to admit to being a bit shallow in that my motive for going was to see Jude, or David as I prefer to call him, his real name is so much nicer. I am a big fan of plays and movies putting a big name into Shakespeare, even though he has a wonderful way with words it can become a bit same old same old without giving it something new and a big name for a box office draw.
I thought this production was amazing, it was really dark, all the costumes were black or grey, the set was black and the lighting was seriously spooky. It was very urban metrosexual as well.

Listening to people in the bar during the interval Mr Law was getting very mixed reviews. Personally I loved his performance, I thought he was brilliant. He was very shouty and he made some very severe facial expressions to the point of gurning and he did have jazz hands but he was playing a crazy. He didn't miss a line and his timing was spot on.
I felt he really knocked the rest of the cast off the stage, the Queen was particularly dull, but the girl who played Ophelia was fabulous and really beautiful.

I really enjoyed it and it was well worth the wait. The stand out scene for me was Hamlet, barefoot in the snow, truly stunning. My criticisms would be wardrobe. Don't use linen unless you are going to iron it every 5 minutes and get the men some trousers that fit. Also, I know I was very close but the daggers looked very plastic. David Jude Law also sweats and spits a great deal, I don't know if this is a good or bad thing though. I've never been spat at by a movie star before. He could also do with a hair cut, I find the receding hairline quite attractive on him but he should keep it short. He isn't the type of man I'd go for, a bit too pretty but in spite of that he is incredibly handsome and his body is very toned and I'd say now I think he is an excellent actor. Having seen the photos of him in Sherlock Holmes and what that director whose name I can't bare to mention has done to him I would say he is incredibly hot as well.

Absolutely Fabulous

I am back Home And Dry from my quick dash to Amsterdam to see The Pet Shop Boys Pandemonium show. It was well worth the exhaustion I am feeling now as it was fantastic. I loved every single moment of the show and can't wait to see it all again. They played the small and intimate Heineken Music Hall which was a perfect venue for them. I'm not quite sure how they filled the stage at The O2 unless they built much bigger walls of white bricks. The show took it's visual lead from the cover of the Yes album with lots of coloured cubes not only on the video screens but on the backing singers outfits, who wore cubes on their heads which must have been boiling. The show opened with Heart and the Boys walked through the white cubes wearing the same cubes on their heads for the opening number.

After this the cubes were removed and we were entertained with a number of different looks, Brokeback Pet Shop Boy, City Pet Shop, Flamboyant Pet Shop Boy and Formal Pet Shop Boy to name but a few.
There is a reason this is not a reunion tour like a lot of the bands from the same era are doing, and that is because they have continued to make consistently good albums over the last 20 odd years and Yes is up there as one of their best albums ever. The tour is obviously promoting Yes but there was enough of the back catalogue included to keep everyone happy. Go West was a sort of 70's Jane Fonda workout production, Always On My Mind had a video of Blackpool, Chris' hometown playing and Jealousy and Kings Cross had Neil in a dinner jacket with some serious ballet moves coming from the backing dancers.

The biggest surprise of the night was a cover of Coldplay's Viva La Vida which had Neil in a gold crown and cloak for "When he ruled the world" and the dancing Manhattan skyline and camp club remix made it pretty spectacular.
The show ended with a major version of It's A Sin followed with the obligatory Thank you, we are the Pet Shop Boys and then the encore of Being Boring with very unboring head wear and a stunning West End Girls.

The only disappointment of the evening was there was no Sylvia Mason James (or Andy Love) on backing vocals on this tour but a definite 10 out 10.

Hot Tranny Mess

There is so much that is wrong with this picture it's frightening. The horse tail hair extensions, the pantomime cow eye makeup, the supersized threepenny bits, that thing across he forehead, the trout pout, the lame!!!!!!!!
She looks like a bad Brighton drag queen, but then again, she IS a bad Brighton drag queen.

O2 Boys

The Pet Shop Boys played The O2 tonight, I wasn't there as I had to work but I am off to Amsterdam to catch them there this weekend. There was no way I was going to miss The Pandemonium tour so it is worth the hassle and expense of going to Amsterdam. Yesterday PSB's announced new UK dates for December however, I knew that would happen but I wouldn't have been able to wait 6 whole months to see the show. I have snapped up a ticket for the O2 show as well and am now looking forward to a really good Xmas night out, all I need now is for The Human League to say they are doing some Xmas shows again and I will be feeling really festive.
I wasn't going to check any of the show out before seeing it, but this clip from one of the Russian shows was just too good not to share.

When Love Takes Over

I totally love this song, Ms Kelly is in that awkward "between labels" place so has lended guest vocals to what will be the song of the Summer. She is more like Sasha Fierce than Beyonce can ever dream of being, and it's only 69p at Amazon.

Get Over It

I'm getting more and more irritated with the will she/won't she sing drama around Susan Boyle. The craptastic Britain's Got Talent tour is trundling around the country and she only has to sing 2 songs in it and she keeps cancelling. So you came second, deal with it, build a bridge and get over it. Liberty X didn't risk losing their career by sulking just because they came second to Hearsay. In the year of the big cancellation, Depeche Mode, Tina, Morrissey etc somehow Subo's no show is front page news. If this diva behaviour carries on no one is going to be interested enough to buy that Best Of Broadway album.

Bring On The Girls

There is some exciting news about a couple of girl groups this week. Firstly Bananarama have a new single and album due out in August. There is a taster of the new single Love Comes on here and it sounds fantastic. I can't wait.

The other big news is that The Nolans are reforming and going on tour in October and will be playing Brighton. For anyone under the age of 45 The Nolans were a big name in the 70's and 80's as a group of singing sisters famous for the classic I'm In The Mood For Dancing. The last time I saw them as a group was in the early 90's at G.A.Y. when they were promoting a club remix of In The Mood. I had a massive crush on Linda Nolan as a teenager, she was definitely my favourite and she went on to play Mrs Johnstone in Blood Brothers for years.

When I was about 15 they were playing Tito's Cabaret Club in Cardiff and I remember going to see them. It was a shocking chicken in the basket type of place and I wore one of my fathers ties to try and look old enough to get in. The next day whilst walking through Cardiff I saw the sisters going into a "boutique" and I rushed into Chelsea Girl after them, whilst they were looking at blouses I shamelessly went up to them and asked for an autograph. I had no paper so they signed my arm and I swore I'd never wash again. I was a stalker even in those days.
They have a new album out the end of the month, which looks like a rehash of 2 of their old albums, but that is fine as I only ever had them on vinyl.
You just know what the encore is going to be on the tour and it will be me and hundreds of middle aged housewives all getting in the mood.

Saturday Night Forever

I am in the middle of one those very rare things, a 4 day weekend. This is not really a big deal for me as I'm not much of a weekender and as I have nothing planned and no one to do it with I (foolishly) agreed to go into work tomorrow on my day off. In addition to this I was phoned to ask if I would go in for a few hours this evening as well. Being a boy who can never say no I agreed and I thought well I will be out by 10, it's a Saturday night and I will be in the middle of all the action and I can do a bit of bar hopping which I never do as I never ever go out on a Saturday night.
I got all dolled up and got to the end of my road when I heard a huge splat, firstly the vile smell hit me then I looked down and I was absolutely covered in seagull crap. I turned back and tried to ignore the children laughing at me and to look as if I wasn't bothered even though I was heaving, got in, washed and changed and went back on my way.
It was a very dull evening at work, but I kept thinking I will be letting my hair down soon in Brighton's "gay village". As the time got near to 10 O'clock I noticed all the boys going to the toilet and coming back with hair full of product and little glitzy outfits on. I felt like I was in an episode of Queer Eye For The Straight Guy.
I knew at that point there was no way I was going to hit the scene so I just jumped on a bus and came home. Old age does not come alone and one of the signs you're past it is that you no longer have any yearning to be a Saturday Night Diva.

Random Round Up

There are new trains running from Brighton to London, loving the new funky designs. I'm so over unstriped trains.

With only weeks of the warranty left the email on my iphone has died. I will have to wait until I am off on Friday to get it sorted, I wish the new apple store in Brighton was already open so I could go in and see a genius.

I watched season 1 of Lipstick Jungle last week. If I had just watched the pilot on TV I would never have watched the rest of it as it seemed a lame outright copy of SATC, the spilling of the hand bag, the millionaire boyfriend etc but I loved it. I will be ordering season 2 if only for Paul Blackthorne who plays Brooke Shields husband.

Four weeks today I will be back at The O2 to witness the Second Coming. I cannot wait!

According to my stats on Last FM I listened to 258 Britney songs in the last 7 days in the run up to her show. You can have too much of a good thing, I watched Crossroads this afternoon so I think I will have a little Brit break for a few days. Well until I get a copy of Inside The Dream anyway.

Finally just like Britney, I think I can safely say, I'm not a girl, and not yet a woman.

She Did It Again

I am just back from the Britney Spears show and I am still buzzing a bit about it. Having booked it last year I didn't really know what to expect, a horror show, carnage, running around in a pink wig with a Frappuccino but it was amazing. There were some flaws but I really enjoyed myself.
As I was getting ready to leave this afternoon Paul picked up my ticket and said I can't believe you paid £100 to see some bird mime!!! I said I'm not going to see some bird, I'm going to see the legendary Miss Britney Spears, bet you didn't see that one coming, which totally went over his head and I flounced off to The O2. The journey there was horrific, a million Britney fans all packed into a bus as if we were being carted off to the gas chambers.

Outside the O2 the fun began, there was a whole circus set up with rides and clowns and people on stilts and this girl who was squeezing herself into a tiny box, I think her name was Helena.

The stage looked pretty amazing as I took my seat, a 3 ring circus set up in the round and when I found I was sitting in the 2nd row from the stage I started hyper ventilating. The opening act was Ciara who was OK, typical RnB same old same old but quite enjoyable. After they got rid of her the Circus proper started with all kinds of circus acts doing their thing including dancing dwarfs. With that the opening video started and it was Perez Hilton introducing Britney. I never understood why she asked him to do this as he had been so vile to her during her troubled years but at the end of his introduction Britney shoots him which was really funny.
With that Britney descends from the heavens, or rather the roof of the O2 to an amazing reception, it was as if she was back from the dead which she is I guess. Dressed as the ringmaster she opened with Circus and it was major, the stuff going on men falling from the sky, hula hoops trapeze acts everything. Then a golden cage comes up and Britney is in it doing Piece Of Me whilst trying to escape from her gilded cage, very good metaphor. She looked stunning, in really good shape, neither emaciated or fat, her hair was high end, makeup flawless and she even had nails back.

The special effects kept coming, sawn in half, put in a box at one end of the stage and then as if by magic pops up at the other end in a different dress and still the men kept dropping out of the sky picking her up and throwing her around and doing all sorts of Wow things.
My favourite performance was Me Against The Music, Britney appeared in a sari along with the dancers and I did think, can we just move on from Slumdog but it had a fantastic Bhangra remix and the choreography was awesome.
There was so much going on you couldn't take it all in, it is most definitely her best performance ever. I have seen Brit twice before, both rather lame efforts and the last time on the Onyx Hotel tour she was shocking, she didn't even bother to move her lips to the backing tape. I said then that I would never go and see her again but never say never. Her vocals this time were fantastic, they should be as they were laid down in a studio about a year ago I would imagine. Yes , she did it again, she mimed to every single song, but she did pretend to sing this time. I'm not like one of the many queens there who were just happy to be in her presence and say well it's Britney bitch. I think she needs to work a bit harder for the money, I mean even Posh sang her vocals live. When you go to see a singer live in concert it's a pretty standard requirement that they do actually sing.
There was a glimpse of the old Britney towards the end when she had a big tear in the back of her fishnets which did make me laugh, at least she wasn't holding a burger king though.
The verdict is that Britney is back, I thought the show was tremendous but I am going to give it a 7 out of 10. I have deducted princess points as she didn't sing a single note but I have added some as we have to remember it is only months since she managed to get herself from this.

To this,

and she wasn't just having the blues, she was seriously ill. Britney Spears is in fact a fantastic role model, to recover like she has and accept and move on from the humiliation of her lost years is a major thing.
The show ended with Womanizer and I made a run for it to get the 3rd world transport back home. Leaving the O2 I thought that was an incredible night I really enjoyed it, but I also thought , I just paid £100 to see some bird mime.

TFL Drives Me Crazy

Transport For London have just hacked me off no end. I have received an email from Britney and The O2 that on Saturday when 20,000 people are trying to get to and from The O2 TFL have shut down the Jubilee line, the only underground access there. Are they mad!!!!! Why have they got to do the essential work on a day of a concert, it's obviously just to disrupt my Britney experience.
My plans of lunch in the West End and a few drinks with Soho's Briterati have had to be scrapped as I will have to get an overhead train to some god forsaken place followed by a bus. The show is also (allegedly) starting earlier so that it can finish in time for people to get home so I will be getting the early bird special at The O2.
It's going to be like a circus.

So Long, Farewell

With our scandal hit M.P.'s all running for the hills in shame perhaps the biggest casualty fell today. Home Secretary Jacqui Smith has jumped before maybe being pushed using that old cliche "to spend more time with her family".
I always found her really irritating and am glad she went, not because she was useless at her job or because she downloaded porn at the tax payers expense, but because on a day when she knew she would have been photographed she thought it was a wise decision to wear this!

Even More Miserable Now

The good news is that Morrissey is recovered from his recent malaise and he sent me a little e mail apologising for standing me up, hawking his new b sides album and confirming that he is now ft enough to resume the tour. The bad news is that he has not rescheduled the Brixton dates to October like all the others but he will be doing them in July instead. The date I am rescheduled for I just cannot make which is seriously annoying. Last year I slaved over a hot laptop frantically trying to score a ticket for a date I would not be working and months ahead enough for me arrange my diary around.
I know I am a bit of an old maid wanting everything in my life scheduled for the whole year, my ical is my life support system and it has now been thrown into chaos again. I will have to miss seeing the man who I have looked forward to seeing for months, send the ticket back to the evil Ticketmaster at great expense by registered post and wait for them to decide if they can bothered to refund me.
I think I might just stop going to concerts altogether cos everyone is just too sickly these days, well except for Our Lady of course.

What A Scorcher

Firstly the good news, for me anyway, is that my beard is growing back already. It feels really weird not to see or feel it and I just don't feel like myself without it any more. Like all mad dogs and Englishmen I went out in the midday sun today but I made sure my head was covered up this time.

One of the very many things we don't have in common is what to do on a boiling hot sunny day. Paul is more than happy to just soak up the sun and sit in it for hours and turn a nice golden brown. I find it boring, tiring and uncomfortable and being very fair skinned I have to stay covered up or I just burn and get skin cancer.
We went down the beach though today and we must have looked a right pair, Paul in his shorts sunbathing and me fully clothed sipping on a red hot Starbucks reading my book. After an hour I couldn't stand it any more and the backs of my hands started burning, my back was killing me just sitting bolt upright on the pebbles and I was sweating like a pig.
Life being all about compromises I moaned and grumbled enough until I got my way and we moved and retired to the lawns in front of the beach where I could sit on a nice clean bench with support for my back and Paul could soak up the rays on the grass. There was a little fence between us so I did feel a bit like the Boy In The Striped Pyjamas but at least I could read in the shade without the worry that I might swallow a bug and we could still speak to each other through the bars.

I've come to the conclusion were not your average couple. Here is me enjoying the sun.
